Survey results and plan for a workshop intervention

I sent out a survey to discover the views of other professionals in a related subject. 95.7 % of people surveyed agree that media can help distribute dance work to a wider audience. The same number of people believe that showing students DVD clips of professional dance works will benefit their learning while 82.6% of people surveyed think that video feedback (students watching video footage of their own work for self reflection and evaluation) can benefit their training. Therefore I will be further exploring these technologies within my professional inquiry.

I plan to teach two workshops, one without any use of technology and one workshop incorporating both methods of showing DVD clips and showing Video footage of students own work for self evaluation. I will record the students progress through filming, discussions and written evidence (peer/self evaluation and assessment / survey). I predict those students taking part in workshop 2 will make greater progress than those students taking part in workshop 1.  Please see below some analysis of my survey results.

  1. The evidence that most people answered yes to you questions is not surprising - but what areas people have chosen could be unpacked. so watching dvds - why? cameras why communication? Seeing the movement? what is the pedagogy behind this - is it about bring in visual social science techniques? Why are some forms of interaction more useful? What do the experts say about this and pedagogy? It sounds like your intervention might lead you to some useful information about the topic but also about how you want to put these ideas into your practice - remember there are many factors in learning so an intervention can guide practice - did the intervention prove helpful to those who participated in it? how can you establish that it did?

  2. Hi Paula,

Since posting this blog I have been reading further literature on this actual topic. I am writing a literature review.

  3. Hi Paula

The Intervention proved to help my students make outstanding progress. Showing a DVD clip was a good use of time management as my students could observe and analyse professional dance works and take this as inspiration to create their own version of a dance battle.

Through use of video feedback they were able to observe their own work, critical reflect on this and to apply their own targets. They made individual and group improvements to meet the criteria to achieve a higher grade in their assessment.

These forms of technology interaction are most relevant in a dance lesson. I expect that my students found these methods to be engaging.

I did however run out of time at the end of the workshop. In future I plan to show the students their work in comparison to the Professional dance work clip, side by side at the same time, using the "Dart fish" programme recommended by Lee Webb (during an interview). I would preferably re-record students work again in a later rehearsal, also for comparison / further self reflection.

Other visual aids such as a picture and Power Point Presentation can be effective if used appropriately and for the right reasons (relevant to the task).
